The Red Brick Road
by: Rachel Eagle Reiter
"Dorothy, take the Ruby slippers!"
"I don't want your Ruby slippers!"
"Dorothy, take the Ruby slippers or you won't be able to get back home."
"My Home is wherever I place my feet," retorted Dorothy.
"Dorothy! You are going the wrong way. You are to follow the YELLOW BRICK ROAD!"
"Yellow Brick Road? Oh, no...that's been tread upon before. I am going to follow the
RED BRICK ROAD!"
"But nobody has been on the Red Brick Road, and nobody knows where it leads to," warned
The Good Witch."
"That is exactly why I am going to take this path. I want to go where nobody has gone
before. The Yellow Brick Road is sooo YESTERDAY. I want to pave the way for Tomorrow."
"Then you will need these slippers. Take them just in case you face danger. Three
clicks with your heels and you will escape with your life."
"The path is made out of Fire Stones. Let those be my Ruby Reds."
Dorothy placed a bare foot on the Red Brick Road.
"Don't burn yourself, Dorothy!"
"Hot...but not too hot...YES...this is my path."
Dorothy began her walk upon the fire stones that lit up the Red Brick Road.
"Be careful, Dorothy! You don't know where the path will lead to."
"That's the Journey! I am going to see the unseen and know the unknown."
Dorothy met a Tin Man, a Scarecrow and a Lion while she was traveling along the Red Brick
Road. The Tin Man complained that he was missing a Heart. The Scarecrow complained that
he was missing a brain. The Lion complained that he was missing courage. All three
looked to Dorothy as though she was a Goddess. They had never seen anyone who was brave
enough to follow the Red Brick Road before. They were sure that Dorothy could help them.
"Oh, silly Tin Man, you are crying and crying that you don't have a heart. Don't you
know, Tin Man, that you wouldn't be able to cry if you didn't have a heart. Your heart
has been with you all along and you didn't even know it. Then she sent him on his way.
Oh, foolish Scarecrow, you are rambling on about how you wish you had a brain.
Scarecrow, you DO have a brain. You wouldn't be able to speak if you didn't have a
brain. Then she sent him on his way. As for you, Lion, you were brave enough to come up
to me and ask me for courage. You were brave enough to walk with me along the Red Brick
Road and now I want you to believe in yourself NO MATTER WHAT. You do have the courage
to face all danger because there is no such thing as a cowardly lion."
Even though Dorothy sent the Lion away, he still continued to follow her along the Red
Brick Road.
"Dorothy, I'm afraid to leave you all alone on the Red Brick Road. Let me walk with you
in case we meet danger."
"YOU are protecting ME. Just a moment ago, you were seeking courage."
"There is NO such thing as a cowardly lion, Dorothy. Isn't that what you told me?"
"Yes, I'm certain I did. There may be a such thing as a cowardly girl, though," Dorothy
began to shiver. The wind blew from the North. Dark clouds covered the heavens.
"I'll be your coat," said the Lion, nuzzling next to Dorothy.
"I thought it was you who needed me, but really it is I who need you," Dorothy pet the
Lion's soft fur and smiled.
"There's shelter in a nearby den," said the Lion.
